Communicating with people with an intellectual disability
Make sure you:
- Make eye contact
- Use usual volume and tone
- Use non-patronising language and actions
- Check that the person understands and is satisfied with the information given
- Ask the person to tell you what they now have to do
Other tips
- If the inquirer does not appear to understand, find another way to express the information
- Information must be socially appropriate.
- Do not be rude by being abrupt.
These tips also apply to people whose English language skills are poor.
