Fortnite Battle Royale is one of the most popular F2P battle royale video game. With 200 million registered players from all over the world, it places in the top 10 games with the most player count as of the end of 2018.
Full-cross platform support
Fornite Battle Royale has an impressive full cross-platform support, and is the first and only game in history to do so as of this time of writing. Other battle royale games enjoy some kind of cross-platform support.
For example, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds supports all but macOS and Nintendo Switch, Crazy Justice supports all but Android and iOS. Only Fortnite has succeeded in getting players from mobile, consoles, and PC to all play together in a single game.
This doesn’t mean, however, that players can play with other players from all platforms in a single game. Those who play on PS4 and Xbox One can only be put in a battle with PC, Mac, and mobile players. Those on Switch can be put in a battle with players from PC, Mac, mobile, and Xbox One. PS4, Switch and Xbox One can play with each other on beta as of September 2018.
In each game, 100 players from different platforms are stuck with each other in a free-for-all battle royale where only one will emerge victorious. The battle takes place in an area that gets smaller over time. Those outside the area suffer fatal damages, forcing them to stay in the area so getting face to face with their enemies is inevitable.
Items in the arena can be broken down to use as weapons or as fortification. Players start with no obvious advantages over one another. Players get to die only once, so only one player will eventually win any single game. Ah, yes, it’s free-to-play, but is it pay-to-win?
One way (and possibly the only way) for F2P games to create significant revenue is to, of course, receive donations via players’ in-app purchases. In turn, these donations give the players some in-game advantages.
V Bucks are Fortnite’s game currency. And though having enough V Bucks doesn’t give an unfair advantage, it does make a difference on the game’s overall gameplay.
For one, players can purchase skins and accessories with V Bucks. It also allows players to purchase Heroes for the Save the World or the PVE mode. It can also be used to purchase Llama Pinatas. Llama Pinatas contain different items – it can carry traps, weapons, heroes, survivors, defenders, resources and many other goodies of different levels of rarity!
V Bucks can be purchased in quantities of 1,000 to 10,000 per transaction. Purchasing 2,500 and 10,000 V Bucks gives a bonus of 300 and 3,500 V Bucks, respectively.
F2P not P2W
Fortnite Battle Royale is F2P (Free to Play) and not P2W (Pay to Win). Players can choose to support the developers with their in-game purchases and donations and this won’t give them an unfair advantage over those who wouldn’t want to spend a dime. Players can still get their fair share of V Bucks from dailies and quests, though those who’d want more can maybe try a V Bucks generator.
